DHAKA: The High Court ordered police deployment at large mango orchards in Rajshahi and elsewhere of the country within seven days, to prevent chemical use in cultivating the popular summer fruit.

Besides, an observation team will monitor fruit markets and depots so that none can use chemical for ripening mango.

The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader issued the order after hearing an appeal of lawyer Monjil Morshed Tuesday (April 9).

Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police-Rajshahi Range were directed to implement the order, said Monjil Morshed.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), BSTI (Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution) Managing Director, Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and BSTI Director (Chemical Testing Wing) were asked to submit a report upon implementing the order, within 30 days.

Secretaries to industries, home and food ministries, IGP, BSTI MD, RAB DG, BSTI Director (Chemical Testing Wing), Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner, DIG-Rajshahi and NBR Chairman were made respondents, in the order.

On February 29, 2012, the HC pronounced a verdict of seven-point directives for safe mango cultivation.

Lawyer Monjil Morshed said he filed the plea after observing much inclination to chemical use in mango cultivation and ripening last year.
