Stop using tannery waste in poultry feed: HC

DHAKA: The High Court directed the authorities concerned to initiate action against the use of tannery waste in producing poultry and fish feed.

An HC bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the order along with a related rule Tuesday (April 2) after the hearing of a supplementary plea.

Lawyer Monjil Morshed moved for the plea, at the courtroom.

The plea was filed on behalf of Human Rights & Peace for Bangladesh attaching a newspaper report published on March 25 saying the food production continues with toxic tannery waste denying a court order.

The court also directed the authorities to take necessary legal action against those involved in producing the above-mentioned foods.

It asked for the progress report upon implementing the orders, within a month.

On July 21, 2011, the HC delivered a verdict announcing shutdown of the factories where tannery waste were used to produce foods for poultry and fish farming.

On Tuesday, in the rule, the HC asked to reply six defendants—secretaries for industry, commerce, food, health and fisheries and livestock and inspector general of police (IGP) why action for court contempt won’t be brought against them for not abiding by the HC rule.
