DHAKA: The High Court extended by one year its earlier order that granted bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in connection with two defamation cases filed in Dhaka and Narail.

The HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim delivered the order on Tuesday (Feb 5) after hearing a bail extension plea.

Senior advocate AJ Mohammad Ali and Barrister Kaiser Kamal moved for Khaleda Zia.

After completion of her bail term, Khaleda’s lawyer filed a petition seeking extension of bail.

Earlier on August 13 in 2018, the HC granted a six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a defamation case filed in Narail and she also got bail in a defamation case filed in Dhaka on August 14.

As per prosecution, Khaleda Zia questioned the actual number of Liberation War martyrs at a discussion held in Dhaka, which was broadcast in media on December 21, 2015.

Besides, she made objectionable remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

On December 24, 2015, Raihan Faruqi Imam, hailed from Chapail village under Naragati Police Station, filed a defamation case against BNP Chairperson in Narail court in this regard.

On July 25, 2016, the court summoned her.

On August 23, 2016, the court ordered BNP Chairperson to appear in court.
