4.5cr suffer from fatty liver disease in Bangladesh

DHAKA: In Bangladesh, about 4.5 crore people are affected by Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or fatty liver disease.

Among them, 18 lakh people are affected with liver cirrhosis. If awareness is not raised, people of the country will be at risk of severe health problem in near future.

Speakers said this at the Round Table Conference arranged by Forum for the Study of the Year at Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia hall of the National Press Club on Wednesday (June 12) marking the 2nd International Nash Day.

Speakers said that people suffer from nash mainly for food habit or less physical labor. Liver, one of the main parts of the human body, spoils the functioning in this disease due to excess fat. If you do not prevent at the right time, then the liver loses its ability slowly, which causes liver cirrhosis, and even causes also liver cancer.

Fatty liver disease is a condition in which fat builds up in your liver. There are two main types: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and Alcoholic fatty liver disease, also called alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Dr. Nurul Islam Hasib, General Secretary of DCAB, said that American scientists are highlighting the harmful aspects of fast food. As a result, Coca-Cola and American burgers are eying to shift business in a country like Bangladesh. The company has own factory here. The government will have to raise taxes to hike taxes on fast food businesses like Tobacco.  

Former secretary Nasir Uddin said that public safety and public health should be ensured. Increasing awareness can help people avoiding fast food and adulterated food.

He said that 88 percent of the medicines are sold without prescription. How is it possible? The adulterated food is one of the reasons for the loss of the liver.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Kanak Kanti Barua said, "Food adulterers are not punished in our country. It has to be ensured in food adulteration. Nash is a silent killer. To prevent this disease increasing of awareness is a must.
