In a bid to clinch the Independence Cup title, reigning champions Bashundhara Kings will take on Dhaka Abahani Limited in their final match today (Dec 18) at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Sepoy Mustofa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur.

The match is scheduled to start at 05:30pm (BST) and will be telecast live on T Sports.

Kings, who made their debut in the Independence Cup during the last edition of the meet in 2018, defeated Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra by 2-1 goals in the final to clinch their first Independence Cup title.

This year, Kings showcased even better performance from the previous edition as they won all five matches in the tournament so far and scored 16 goals and conceded only one goal before the final.

In the group stage, the champions beat Navy by 6-0, Police FC by 1-0 and Chittagong Abahoni Limited by 3-0. Later, they beat Sheikh Jamal DC by 4-0 in the quarterfinal and Police FC by 2-1 in the semifinal. 

 “(We’re) all set for tomorrow’s (today’s) game. We just feel pleasure to be in the final game. I’ve earlier said we have depth in our squad that helps in keeping the group committed and motivated,” head coach Oscar Bruzon told The Daily Sun on Friday.

 Meanwhile, Dhaka Abahani, who made a place in the Independence Cup final after five years, also maintained an unbeaten run in the tournament.

They beat Swadhinata KS by 2-1 and Rahmatganj MFS by 3-1 in the group stage. The sky-blue outfit crushed Army by 4-0 in the quarterfinal before they defeated Saif Sporting Club Limited by 2-0 in the semifinal.

The Dhanmondi giants won the Independence Cup title once beating Dhaka Mohammedan by 2-1 in 1990 and the last time they played in the final was back in 2016 when they ended runners-up after conceding a 0-2 defeat to Chittagong Abahoni Ltd.
