MS Dhoni led CSK made auspicious start in IPL 2020 shocking the reigning champions MI in the opening match of the tournament. But they appeared to loose their way a bit after that. Last night when things started looking a bit bleak for them, their star recruits Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis looked awesome as they hunted down the 179 target that KKIP set before them like well oiled machine. Batting first KKIP posted a moderate score of 178/4 in their allotted over. Watson and du Plessis then batting superbly produced an unconquered opening partnership of 181 in 17.4 Overs. CSK winning by 10 wickets kept their hopes alive for a last minute gate crash into the business session.
It was an exhibition of cultured slaughtering by two of the tormentors in T20 cricket. Shane Watson displaying his wonderful brand of aggressive batting and protean du Plessis matching his Aussie partner strokes for strokes made it cake walk for CSK in the second match of the double header at Dubai yesterday. CSK and KKIP were languishing at the bottom of the points table. It was ‘do or die’ for both. CSK winning big kept their hopes alive. While the mission 2020 of 11 kings from Punjab appears all but over. CSK won the match by 10 wickets for the superb unbroken opening partnership of 181 between Watson –du Plessis chasing the 178/4 of KKIP.
Batting first KKIP captain and opener KL Rahul once again was the spearhead with his cultured innings of 63 in 52 deliveries. With M Agarwal (26) the opening pair was looking good scoring 61 by the 9th over. Third wicket partnership between Rahul and Pooran (33) produced 58. But apart from that there was hardly any urgency in KKIP batting. 178/4 appeared at list 30 runs short on the say paced Dubai wicket.
Watson and du Plessis looked like dismissive and hungry as they kept played aggressive strokes from the outset. KKIP bowlers could hardly make any impression. It was an exhibition of superlative strokes play. There was little urgency. It was all but grace and beauty; IPL has rarely seen such an eye-catching display of batsman ship. Watson in his unbeaten innings of 83 off 53 deliveries struck 11 fours and 3 sixes, while du Plessis remained unbeaten scoring 87 off 53 balls striking 11 fours and a six. The pair scored 181 in their winning march. CSK won big by 10 wickets with 2.2 overs to spare.
With 2 more matches still to play CSK looks like racing against time for a late stage gate crash into business session. For doing that they have to win both. It does not look like going beyond them if they can keep their winning momentum going.
