Patiya Jubo League marks Aug 21 grenade attack anniversary 

Patiya Jubo League-led by organisation’s central joint-general secretary Muhammad Badiul Alam has observed gruesome August 21 grenade attack anniversary.

Leaders and activists of Awami League, Patiya Jubo League, Chhatra League and other front organisations of the party participated in the event organised commemorating deaths of innumerable ranks and files of the party in the attack on Saturday.

On August 21, 2004, a heinous grenade attack was carried out by militants patronised by BNP-Jamaat government, especially party’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, on a rally of the then opposition Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka.

The attack aimed at killing the then leader of the opposition, Awami League president and now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Although Sheikh Hasina survived the attack, she was critically injured.    

At least 24 people, including Awami League women affairs secretary and late president Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman, were killed.

Khatam-e-Quran ceremony, milad and doa mahfil were held marking the grenade attack anniversary.

Participants of the programme prayed for eternal peace of the martyrs of the incident. They wished long life of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They also distributed food among orphan children.

The event took place at Khankaye Hamediya Shah Mazediya Rashidiya Mosque at ward-3 of the Patiya municipality.

Freedom fighter Ishak, former upazila Jubo League joint convenor Zamir Uddin, former Patiya municipality Chhatra League president Sohel Imran, upazila Awami League leader Shahjahan Chowdhury, ward-3 Awami League organising secretary Saiful Islam, ward-1 organising secretary Nazrul, Chattogram (south) Jubo League leader Towhidur Alam Jewell, Patiya Jubo League leader Sujon Barua, and upazila Chhatra League leader Sajjad Hossain took part in the programme.
