Bangla daily newspaper Prothom Alo’s Editor Matiur Rahman and three other journalists of the daily have faced a Tk100 crore defamation lawsuit for publishing reports against former home minister and current Chandpur-1 (Kachua) MP Dr Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir.

Kachua upazila parishad Vice-Chairman Advocate Helal Uddin lodged the case with Chandpur senior judicial magistrate court on Sunday noon.

Complainant Helal Uddin said Prothom Alo published two separate reports on July 30 and September 4 against Dr Mahiuddin Khan Alamgir saying the lawmaker bought medical college with someone else’s money. 

The information and allegations mentioned against Dr Mahiuddin in both reports are false and publication of such reports damaged the image and fame of the veteran politician, he said. 

Chandpur senior judicial magistrate court-2 took the case into cognizance and asked the district additional superintendent of police to investigate the matter before filing the report, Helal added.
