Case filed over Uttara accident

A case has been filed against the contractor of the BRT-3 Elevated Expressway over passengers’ deaths on the Dhaka-Mymensingh road in Uttara of the capital on Monday (August 15).

Afran Mondal Babu, the brother of deceased Fahima Akhtar and Jharna Akhtar, filed the case against them with Uttara West police station on Monday midnight.

The crane operator and several unnamed people have been made accused of the case.

On Monday, five members of a family, including two children, were killed after a box girder of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project fell on their private car at Uttara in the capital.

Two other occupants of the vehicle also suffered serious injuries in the incident.

Four of the deceased were identified as Rubel (50), Jharna (28), Jannat (6), and Jakaria (2).

The injured are Hridoy (26), and Ria Moni (21).

Officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station Mohammad Mohsin has confirmed the matter.

He said a crane was lifting a box girder to shift it from one place to another. However, the crane got tilted and the girder landed on the private (Dhaka Metro Ga-22-6008).

Hriody and Ria were rescued from the car and rushed to a nearby hospital, the OC said, adding that others got stuck inside the car.

Later, police and firefighters recovered the dead bodies, said the officer.

Managing Director (MD) of Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Ltd (DBRTCL) Safiqul Islam claimed that the incident occurred due to technical faults.

In response to a question -- who was responsible for the incident, he said it was not related to the safety issue.
