Four female workers were killed and four others injured as a train hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw at a rail crossing in Nilphamari's Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning.
The deceased were identified as Sayera Banu, 33, Shefali Akter, 28, Ruma Akter, 35, and Minara Akter, 22, residents of Dhanipara area under Sonarai Union in the upazila. All of them were the workers of Uttara EPZ in the district.
According to witnesses, a train rammed a battery-run auto-rickshaw, carrying nine people, while the vehicle was crossing Daroyani rail line at about 6:30am, leaving one dead on the spot and eight others injured.
Later, three succumbed to their injuries on way to Nilphamari General Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Sonaray Union Parishad chairman Nurul Islam Shah confirmed the deaths of four people.
He said the accident occurred due to thick fog. Moreover, the number of accidents is increasing as these vehicles are running smoothly due to unprotected rail crossings, he added.
