5 ex-students of SUST held for ‘aiding protesters’

Police arrested five former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) for ‘aiding protesters’ in the campus.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Commissioner Nisharul Arif confirmed the matter on Tuesday (Jan 25).

The law enforcement forces detained them from different parts of the capital, he said.

Family and friends alleged that they were detained for providing financial support to the ongoing student protest demanding the resignation of SUST Vice-chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed.

Meanwhile, hunger strike of the students demanding resignation of the VC entered the seventh day today (Tuesday).

They also requested the government authorities, especially Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni to visit the SUST campus, see the situation and take necessary action.

The 24 students started the fast-unto-death programme on Wednesday afternoon demanding the resignation of the VC. The strike started following police action on the agitating students.
