Protesting SUST students get no more medical support

The team of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital has stopped providing services to the protesting students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

The students made the disclosure in an emergency press briefing held around 2:30am on Tuesday.

According to them all the mobile banking numbers of the present and former students of the university used to receive financial assistance, have been disabled from Monday noon.

The students expressed deep concerns for the lives of those on hunger strike and also for the protest.

Ariful Islam, a spokesperson for the protesters, said that the condition of all the students on hunger strike in front of the VC's residence is being deteriorated. They all are suffering from multiple physical complications, including low oxygen, convulsions and sugar levels in blood, and blood pressure, he added.

Meanwhile, hunger strike of the students demanding resignation of the VC entered the seventh day today (Tuesday).

They also requested the government authorities, especially Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni to visit the SUST campus, see the situation and take necessary action.

The 24 students started the fast-unto-death programme on Wednesday afternoon demanding the resignation of the VC. The strike started following police action on the agitating students.

On Friday, the students also brought out a torch rally and burnt the effigy of the VC on the campus.

However, a delegation of teachers met the students and requested them to break their fast, but students didn’t respond to their request.

On Monday, the protesting students wrote an open letter to President Abdul Hamid, demanding the immediate removal of VC.

A notice issued by the SUST authority shutting down the campus and order vacation of the halls and dormitories was also rejected by the students.
