9 KUET students suspended after teacher’s death

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) authorities have suspended its nine students on charges of violating the university’s standards of conduct.

They are Sadman Nahyan Sejan and Riyaz Khan Niloy of the Computer Science and Engineering department, Civil Engineering students Tahmidul Huq Ishraq and Mahmudul Hasan of the department, Md Sadman Saqib and ASM Ragib Ahsan Munna of Leather Engineering department, Mechanical Engineering department’s Md Kamruzzaman and Faisal Ahmed Rifat, and Naimur Rahman Antu of Materials Science and Engineering department.

The university authorities disclosed the information in a press release on Saturday.

however, the decision to suspend the students came at a meeting of the university syndicate on Friday after reviewing CCTV footage of the November 30 incident, where Electrical and Electronic Engineering department’s Professor Md Selim Hossain was confined by a group of students at his office.

Prof Selim, 38, also the provost of Lalan Shah Hall Hossain, died hours later at his home. The doctors said he suffered a cardiac arrest. 

Following the incident, the teachers' union on Thursday boycotted academic activities demanding the accused students’ permanent expulsion from the university through a fair investigation.

KUET was declared closed till December 13 amid tension gripping the campus over the death of a teacher of the university on Friday.
