SSC examinee death: Students place 11-point demand

The students have raised 11-point demand while protesting the death of a SSC examinee in the city's Rampura area on Wednesday for the second day. 

The demand came from a human chain.

Students of various educational institutions took to street on the Rampura bridge around 11:00am. They staged a demonstration and formed a human chain there.

The 11-point demands are:

1. Justice for Naim Hossain and Mainuddin Islam Durjoy and adequate compensations to their families must be ensured. Foot-over bridges at Rampura and Gulistan must be constructed.

2. Half fare for students on all public transports must be ensured across the country without any conditions like holidays. The increased bus fare must be withdrawn and the number of BRTC buses must be increased on all routes.

3. Ill-behaviour with women and female students in public transport will have to stop.

4. Stern action must be taken against the transport operators who are running unfit vehicles with unlicensed drivers. Action must be taken against BRTA for its indulgence in corruption in issuing driving licenses.

5. Adequate traffic lights and zebra crossings must be ensured on the roads and the number of traffic police must be increased. The bribe-spree of traffic police will have to stop.

6. The spate of reckless driving on the streets will have to stop and a rational share from the daily income will have to ensure among all transport owners on all routes.

7. Drivers’ appointments and identities must be ensured and contractual appointments in the public transport sector must stop.

8. The working time for the transport workers should be fixed for six hours and all buses will have to keep two drivers and two helpers to avoid any risk. An adequate number of bus stoppage must be built and proper training of the transport workers must be ensured.

9. The existing road transport needs to be amended based on the opinion of passengers, transport workers and government representatives.

10. Trucks, garbage trucks and other heavyweight vehicles should only be allowed on the streets from 12am to 5am every day.

11. Regular drugs test and counselling for the drives and their assistants will have to be ensured.

SSC candidate Mainuddin Islam Durjoy, 16, of Ekramunnesa High School was ran over by a bus of 'Anabil Paribahan' near Rampura Bazar on Monday night.

Later, the angry mob torched nine buses on the road.

Mainuddin Islam's mother filed a case in connection with the accident.
