2 accused of Cumilla councillor murder killed in 'gunfight'

Two accused in the murder case of Cumilla ward councillor Syed Mohammad Sohel and his aide were killed in an alleged “gunfight” with police at Sangraish Balumahal area near Gomti river Beribadh in Cumilla early Tuesday. 

The deceased were Md Sabbir Hossain, 28, number 3 accused in the case; and Sajon, 32, the number 5 accused.

Confirming the matter, Satyajit Barua, officer-in-charge of Cumilla District Detective Branch of Police, said three police members were also injured during the gunfight.

Being informed that the accused were staying at Songraish and Nobogram, a team from Kotwali Model Police Station and DB conducted a drive at about 1am, he said.

Sensing the presence of police members at Beribandh area of the Gomti River, the criminals opened fire on them. For self-defence, the law enforcement agencies also fired back.

Later, the two accused were found injured by bullets on the scene. They were taken to Cumilla Medical Hospital where the on-duty doctors decleared them dead.

Policer recovered a pistol, pipe gun and bullets from their possessions.
