Over 500 shanties gutted in Tongi fire

More than 500 shanties were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at the Mazar slum in Tongi of Gazipur early Saturday.

Although, no casualties were reported, hundreds of people became homeless, Banglanews correspondent reports.

The blaze broke out at the slum next to the Tongi Sena Kalyan building at about 3:55am.

Dinmoni Sharma, deputy director of the Dhaka Division Fire Service, said the fire broke out around 4:00 am. Being informed, nine fire service units from Tongi, Kurmitola and Uttara rushed to the sport and managed to bring the fire under control around 5:50 am, he also said.

It was learned that the fire originated from a mosquito coil inside a home at the slum and gutted more than 500 shantees.

Local people claimed that five people sustained minor injuries while rushing out of their houses.

However, the extent of damage caused by the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
