Hindu Mohajote sues Shaheen Anam; CID asked to investigate

A case was filed against Shaheen Anam, wife of The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam and executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, and Angela Gomes, Executive Director of Banchte Shekha, for allegedly hurting religious sentiment of Hindu minority.

Bangladesh Jatiyo Hindu Mohajote (BJHM) filed the case with Brahmanbaria Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

The court took cognizance of the case and directed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police to investigate it.

According to the case statement, the complainant accused Shaheen Anam and Angela Gomes of trying to amend Hindu law, create division among Hindu community and put minority people against the government and malign Awami League rule internationally.

Earlier, on September 23, a case was filed against Shaheen Anam with Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Narayanganj for hurting the religious sentiment of the Hindu community.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahmudul Mohsin ordered Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case and submit a report by December 21.

Akash Ghose, a member of Hindu community, filed the case with Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

Banchte Shekha Executive Director Angela Gomes was made co-accused in the case.

According to the case dossier, Manusher Jonno Foundation executive director Shaheen Anam and Banchte Shekha executive director Angela Gomes are engaged in a deep-rooted conspiracy to create chaos among the people of Hindu community.

The two NGO bosses have been holding seminars and meetings in various parts of the country for years, seeking amendment to the Hindu law. The duo is working to put people of the minority community against the government.

Senior Judicial Magistrate took cognisance of the case, asked the PBI to investigate the allegation and submit a report. As part of the ongoing protest, Hindu community people staged demonstrations against the unholy move by Shaheen Anam and her cohorts at Sutrapur in the capital on Friday.

The agitating people burnt effigies of Mahfuz Anam and Shaheen Anam for hurting their religious sentiments.

Hindu leaders accused the couple of hatching a conspiracy to create internal faction within minority community and destabilise the country. They also said journalist Anam and his wife are trying to damage religious aristocracy of Hindus.

Apart from seminars at various places of the country, Shaheen Anam and Angela Gomes are holding webinars to spread religious hatred. On March 4, they disclosed draft of “Hindu Inheritance Law 2020.” The NGO bosses are masterminds behind the proposed law, alleged the demonstrators.

The Hindu leaders also claimed that Shaheen Anam formed a committee with her NGO staff Rina Roy, a woman of minority community.

Besides, Mahfuz Anam published fabricated reports and stories in the Daily Star to confuse people, hide the real situation and implement their evil agenda.

In 2007-2008, Mahfuz Anam supported the caretaker regime and tried to eliminate Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from politics. He tried to launch a new party.

Mahfuz and his wife are now conspiring to create a distance between the Awami League-led government and Hindus who are a major vote bank of the party, they alleged.
