The High Court issued a rule on Thursday asking authorities concerned as to why it shall not pass order to record mandatory biometric recognitions such as fingerprints and iris scans during birth registration.
An HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after holding hearing on a writ filed for the sake of public interest.
The court ordered officials concerned including LGRD secretary, Public Security Division secretary and Inspector General of Police to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Human rights activist Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan filed the writ on March 12 last year seeking the High Court directives on the matter.
The petitioner said the writ was filed so that unidentified bodies, criminals and missing persons could be identified easily through biometric data.
