A Shariatpur court on Wednesday awarded death sentence to three people for killing a housewife after gang-rape in Shariatpur.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abdus Salam Khan handed down the verdict at noon.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each.

The death row convicts are-- Morshed Ukil, 56, son of late Lutful Khabir, hailed from Moddhokodalpur village in Gosairhat upazila in Shariatpur, Abdul Haque Mutait, 42, son of late Khorshed Mutain from Char Gharowa village of Damudya upazila, and Md Jakir Hossain Mutait, 33, son of late Majid Mutain from Daimi Char Bhoyra village.

According to the prosecution, Hawa Begum, 40, wife of Khokon Ukil, used to live with her three children in a house in Ukilpara village in Damudya Upazila while her husband used to do house painting works in Dhaka. 

On the night of January 20, 2019, Morshed lured Hawa to a nearby unoccupied house and raped her, while Abdul Haque and Zakir came in later and gang-raped her by turns.

Later in that night, the rapists strangled her to death and left her body there. Damudya police recovered her body in the next day. 

Victim’s husband Khokon Ukil filed a case with Damudya police station later on the day.
