Lalmonirhat mob lynching: Five put on 3-day remand

A Lalmonirhat court on Tuesday placed five accused on three-day remand each in connection with the lynching of a man over allegation of desecrating the holy Quran in Burimari of Lalmonirhat.

Judge Ferdousi Begum of Lalmonirhat Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-3 passed the order after DB police produced them before court with a five-day remand prayer.

The remanded accused are- Asharaful Alam, 22, Baiojid, 24, Yusuf Ali alias Rafiq, 20, Masum Ali, 35, and Shafiqul Islam, 25. 

A total of 16 suspects were arrested so far in three cases filed over the incident. The district Detective Branch of Police is investigating the cases. 

On Thursday afternoon, Shahidunnabi Jewel, son of Abdul Wajed Mia of Shalban Mistripara in Rangpur district town, and a former librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College, was beaten to death by mob in Lalmonirhat’s Patgram upazila over allegations of desecrating the holy Quran.

The mob also burned his body after killing him.

Saiful Islam, cousin of Jewel filed a case with Patgram police station. Moreover, two more cases were filed in this connection.

Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Abu Zafar formed a three-member body to investigate the incident.
