Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged journalists to carry out their duties with objectivity, responsibility, patriotism and for the welfare of the people.
She also told journalists to be cautious about unethical practice in reporting and yellow journalism.
The premier made the remarks while addressing the Silver Jubilee programme of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) held at InterContinental Hotel.
She joined the programme virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.
“Media reports help us a lot. By reading the reports in the newspapers, we stand by the helpless people and take tougher action against the wrongdoers,” she said.
Quoting Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said: “Politics without principle can’t give anything to the country and the nation. Like that, journalism without principle can’t bring any welfare for the country, rather it affects the society in many cases.”
She reiterated her government's strong stance against corruption, terrorism and militancy saying that punishment as per law is ensured to those involved in these social menaces.
"When any news or information comes out about any corruption or unjust activities, we never think whether our party is involved in this, or it’ll bring bad name for the party or the government…we never think about that," she said.
The prime minister said she thinks that the government has to take action against corruption or unjust, whenever it happens.
She said the government is also maintaining its zero tolerance against terrorism and militancy.
PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim moderated the programme from Ganabhaban.
DRU's incumbent president and general secretary, former president and general secretaries, and founding members, among others, were present at the program.
