Rohingya drug trader killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected Rohingya yaba trader was killed in a reported gunfight with the members of Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Naikhongchhari upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday morning.

The deceased is Md Adham, 23, son of Abul Hashem, a resident of Tumbru-Konapara Rohingya camp.

BGB also recovered 40,000 pieces of yaba pills, a locally made pistol and 2 rounds of cartridges from the spot.

According to Cox's Bazar BGB-34 sources, acting on a tip-off about a large consignment of yaba being smuggled into the country, a team of BGB took position at South Baishphandi Makkartila in Ghumdhum Union of Naikhongchari upazila.

At one stage, the team challenged a group of 10-12 people coming towards Bangladesh through the hilly area. In response, they opened fire on the BGB members, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight, sources said.

One yaba trader was recovered with bullet injury after the gunfight and taken to Ukhia Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Naikhongchhari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC, investigation) Moahmmad Billal Hossain told Banglanews: "The body of the deceased Rohingya was kept in Ukhia health complex. Further legal steps will be taken in this regard."
