Two workers were killed and another one injured in a landslide while cutting hills illegally in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar. 

The incident took place in Jharnaghona area of Ukhiarghona under Kawakhop union in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Ali Ahmed, 30 and Mujibur Rahman, 32.

According to police and local sources, the incident occurred when some workers were illegally collecting soil by cutting hills to fill a piece of land in Bhutpara belonging to one Shamsul Alam.

At one point, the pick-up truck, being used to carry the soil, hit the workers from behind and a big chunk of earth from the hill suddenly fell on them, killing two workers on the spot. Another worker Md Rafiq was injured in the same accident.

Ramu police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Azmiruzzaman said: “The injured has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital and the bodies of the deceased were sent to the morgue.” 

After inspecting the accident spot, Ramu Upazila Nirbahi Offier (UNO) Pronoy Chakma said legal action is being taken against people responsible for illegal hill cutting.
