The government has reset the price of potato at Tk 35 per kilogram at retail markets amid increasing pressure from businessmen and stakeholders.
The decision was made after a meeting headed by Department of Agriculture Marketing (DAM) Director General Mohammad Yusuf with businessmen and representatives of cold storage association.
After the meeting, DAM Director Yusuf told reporters that the new price will be effective from Wednesday.
Sources at the meeting said the DAM director initially proposed the prices of per kg potato at wholesale market and retail market to be set at Tk 26 and Tk 33 respectively. However, market committee rejected the proposal.
Later, the prices of per kg potato at wholesale market, retail market and cold storage were fixed at Tk 30, Tk 35 and Tk 27 respectively.
Earlier on October 7, DAM fixed retail price of potato at Tk 30 per kg. The wholesale price was set at Tk 25 and cold storage price at Tk 23 per kg.
