Demo for auto-renewal of Saudi visa, return tickets in Dhaka

Saudi returnees on Tuesday once again staged demonstration demanding solution to their visa complication and return tickets to Saudi Arabia.

The expatriates demanded the auto-renewal of visa and extension of iqamas (residence permits) from Saudi government.

They also asked authorities concerned stop the harassment over return tickets.

After staging a sit-in program, they brought out a procession in front of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Karwan Bazar area of the capital around 10:00 am.

The procession slowly moved towards the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.

The demonstration created a long tailback on the roads leading to Karwan Bazar SAARC Fountain and adjacent areas.

These migrants came home from the oil rich nation before the outbreak of COVID-19 across the globe. However, they could not get back to their workplace due to the shutdown.

They started protesting some five days ago in front of the Saudi Arabian Airlines office in Karwan Bazar for return tickets.

In wake of the protest, Bangladesh government contacted Saudi authorities.

Upon request, the middle-eastern country somewhat extended the validity of expired iqamas (residence permits), as well as exit and re-entry visas of expatriates.

Saudi Airlines have also started selling tickets but in small scale. Hundreds of migrants are yet to get return tickets to Saudi Arabia.
