Verdict in arms case against Papia couple on Oct 12 Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon

A Dhaka court on Sunday fixed October 12 to deliver its verdict in an arms case filed against expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Nur Papia and her husband Mofizur Rahman Sumon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate KM Imrul Kayes fixed the date on completion of arguments from lawyers of both sides.

On September 24, the prosecution completed arguments and sought maximum punishment for Papia and Sumon in the case. 

Later, the defence lawyer presented his arguments and sought their acquittal.

On August 24, the same court framed charges against the duo in the case.  

On June 29, RAB Sub-Inspector Arifuzzaman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, filed the chargesheet against the couple in the case, making 12 people witnesses.

Earlier on 22 February, a team of RAB arrested Papia and her husband, along with two of their accomplices, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies and cash, seven passports, and seven mobile phones.

RAB later raided the house of Papia on Indira Road of capital’s Farmgate area and seized a foreign pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor, Tk 58, 41,000 in cash and credit and debit cards of different banks. 

Three cases were filed against them – two at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Acts and another with Airport police station under the Special Powers Act-1974. The couple were remanded several times in three cases.
