One gets death, another life term for murder in Old Dhaka

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced a man to death and another to life imprisonment for killing a glass trader Aziz Chakladar alias Dhakaiya Aziz in Lalbagh area of the capital 22 years ago.

Judge of Dhaka Special Judges Court-9 Sheikh Hafizur Rahman handed down the verdict with Tk 50,000 fine for both convicts.

The death row convict is Joynal while man who got life sentence is Rustom. Both are fugitives.

The court also acquitted two other accused- Faruk and Idris- in the case as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them.

According to case statements, victim Aziz Chakladar alias Dhakaiya Aziz went missing on his way to Khulna from his house in Lalbagh on March 5, 1998.

Later, victim’s youngest brother Bachuchu Mia filed a general diary (GD) with Lalbagh police station. On March 17, Bachuchu Mia filed an abduction case.

Some remaining body parts- skull and bones- of Aziz was recovered from Rupsa river during investigation.

One year later, police submitted the chrgesheet naming seven accused and 19 witnesses. Court framed charges against the accused in 2000. Later the High Court stayed the trial proceedings of the case following a petition filed by the accused.

Later in 2017, testimony begun after the High Court stay order was removed. After a long trial, the court finally delivered the verdict today.
