The government has imposed a 22-day ban, starting from October 14, on catching, selling and transporting hilsa to ensure safe spawning of the fish during its peak breading season.

Md Iftekhar Hossain, public relations officer at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, made the disclosure on Wednesday.

He said catching, selling and transporting of hilsa are banned for 22 days from October 14 to November 4.

Hilsa fishes move from coastal areas to the major rivers like Padma and Meghna to lay eggs during the month of October.

Around 60 percent of Hilsa lay eggs in this period. For their safety breeding, the government imposes the ban every year.
