Fortified rice will be available for low income and working class families under the Open Market Sales (OMS) programme of government in Dhaka.
The Ministry of Food and the World Food Program (WFP) on Monday officially included fortified rice under the OMS program, said a press release of WFP.
Richard Regan, country director of WFP Bangladesh, Sarwar Mahmud, director general of Directorate General of Food, and Md Zahangir Alam, chief controller of Dhaka Rationing, jointly inaugurated the programme at Mohammarpur in the capital.
Nutrition International and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition will assist with the advocacy work for this programme.
Around 720,000 people in 144,000 households will be benefited from this programme. Low income families will be able to buy fortified rice from OMS at Tk 30 per kilogram up to 20 kilograms a month.
The rice will be available at 120 OMS centres inside the two city corporations of Dhaka from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for six days a week.
