EC to appoint new NID officials in all upazilas

The Election Commission (EC) has taken an initiative to appoint officials at upazila level in a bid to speed up the NID related activities.

To make new appointments, EC has created separate post in this regard.

The NID department officials of EC said the initiative would curb the irregularities and hassle in the NID and voter enlistment process.

EC sources said currently there is only one official appointed in upazila or thana level. They were appointed through BCS cadre post.

It is very difficult for one person to do all the work at upazila election office.
The primary job of an election official is to create voter list and conduct elections. However, presently, they are also carrying out NID related works as an additional duty, EC officials said.

Even though the upazila election official has two data entry operators as assistance, it is still a huge task to perform alone. Many irregularities and difficulties are being created because of this lack of workforce. Boosting manpower is the best solution to the problems, they said.

Election commission has office in all 492 upazilas of the country, in addition of 15 offices in the capital. EC planning to appoint over 500 officials in these offices.

EC Joint Secretary and NID section Director Md Abdul Baten said: “New post has been created already. Now it is time for appointment. I hope it will mitigate the workload.”

Currently there are around 11 crore registered voters in Bangladesh. However, new voter applications are being submitted every day and EC is issuing NID to the applicants from upazila offices after inspection, he added.
