‘Drug peddler’ killed in Sylhet ‘gunfight’

 

SYLHET: A suspected drug peddler was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Ajoa village of Sultanpur union under Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet early Monday (Aug 3).

The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan Munna, 35.

Zakiganj police station’s officer-in-charge Mir Md Abdun Nasser confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

He said Munna was accused in 12 drug cases filed with different police stations.

According to the OC, Munna was arrested Sunday afternoon as he had an arrest warrant issued against him. After extensive interrogation, Munna informed the police that he had yaba pills and weapons stashed in his house. Police later took Munna along on a drive to his house to recover the contraband items. 

Upon their arrival, Munna’s associates attacked police in order to snatch him away. Police fired back in self-defence. When the criminals retreated, police found that Munna had received bullet injuries. 

Munna was taken to Zakiganj Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

A locally-made firearm, five bullets, six sharp weapons and 800 yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
