KHULNA: A man, listed as a top terrorist by police, was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Rupsa upazila of Khulna on Thursday morning (July 30).
The alleged shootout occurred at around 5:00 am in Vekutimari area on the Khulna-Mongla highway near Rampal power station in Bagerhat.
The deceased was identified as Mostafa Kamal alias Mina Kamal alias Fata Kesto, (55). He was a Jubo League leader and the former chairman of Naihati Union Parishad.
Mina Kamal was accused of 25 cases including killing of Sarjeel Islam Sangram (28), said police.
Lt Cor Rowshanul Firoz, captain of RAB-6, said: “Being tipped-off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in Vekutimari area. Sensing presence of law enforcers, Mina’s associates opened fire on RAB men forcing them to fire back in self-defence which triggered a gunfight.”
“At some point, Mina was caught in the line of fire and got shot while his companions fled the scene. Two RAB members were also injured in the shootout. Later bullet-hit Mina was taken to Rampal upazila health complex where on-duty physician declared him dead on arrival,” he said.
RAB also seized a pistol, some bullets, knife and drugs from the spot, the RAB captain added.
