COX’S BAZAR: A Rohingya man, identified as a robber by law enforcers, was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on early Wednesday (July 22).

The incident occurred near bridge No-14 adjacent to Teknaf land port in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Rashid Ullah, son of Md Shafik Ullah, a resident of Leda Rohingya camp.

RAB also seized two locally made guns and five cartridges from the spot.

Biman Chandra Karmakar, assistant superintendent of police and in-charge of RAB-15 Teknaf camp, confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

He said: “On secret information, a team of RAB conducted a drive in Teknaf land port area to arrest a robber gang last night.”

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, robbers opened fire at the RAB personnel, forcing them to shoot back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight, he claimed.

After the gunfight, RAB men found a bullet-hit body lying on the ground while other members of the group managed to flee the scene. The injured man was rushed to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital where duty doctor pronounced him dead on arrival, Biman Chandra added.
