Writ filed against 60pc bus fare hike 

DHAKA: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directive against the 60 percent fare hike of public transports in the country amid ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Supreme Court Lawyer Humayun Kabir Pallab filed the petition on Monday. 

The defendants in the writ petition are the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges (Road Transport and Highways Division), the chairman of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and other concerned authorities.

The government on Sunday issued a gazette notification increasing fares for public buses up to 60 percent with effect from June 1, 2020.

According to the circular, two passengers cannot sit together to maintain social distancing. One seat has to be kept vacant between two passengers. 

Buses cannot carry more passengers that the number of seats mentioned as per their registration certificates. No standing passengers will be allowed, it said.

Health guidelines need to be followed while transporting passengers, the circular added.
