Life sketch of Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan

DHAKA: Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan was born in 1943 at Masimpur village in Shibpur upazila of Narsinghdi district. He passed the Matriculation from Shibpur High School in 1958 and HSC from Narsingdi College in 1961.

He obtained BA (honours) degree from Dhaka University in 1964 and MA in 1965.

The longest serving Secretary General of BNP, Bhuiyan joined the student politics in 1961 and was elected social welfare secretary of the Narsingdi College Chattra Sangsad.

One of the organizers of Student Union, Bhuyian had played a pioneering role in anti-Aiyub movement and given leadership in different capacities.

He was elected General Secretary of the Student Union in 1966.

He joined the United People’s Party (UPP), led by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and acted as organizing secretary of the party.
Bhuyian joined BNP in 1980 and was elected MP from Shibpur-3 constituency in 1991.

He was made state minister for Labour and Manpower and then promoted to a Cabinet Minister in October 10 and given the portfolio of LGRD and Cooperatives in 2001.

Mannan Bhuiyan had served the BNP as secretary general for 11 years but expelled by the party chairperson before her arrest in September 2007 during the caretaker government.
