The government has imposed a 22-day ban starting October 12 on catching, selling and transporting hilsa across the country to ensure safe spawning of the fish, during its peak breeding season.
The Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, S M Rezaul Karim disclosed the matter on Wednesday (September 20).
He said catching, selling and transporting of hilsa are banned for 22 days from October 12 to November 2.
Hilsa fishes move from coastal areas to the major rivers like Padma and Meghna to lay eggs during the month of October.
Around 60 percent of Hilsa lay eggs in this period. For their safety breeding, the government imposes the ban every year.
