DU students block Shahbagh demanding Matiur's arrest

General students of Dhaka University today (April 1) blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka for more than one hour demanding the arrest of Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman.

Students began the blockade at about 11:20am and continued it till 12:25pm.

Earlier on March 26, Prothom Alo published a ‘graphic card’ with a photograph and a quotation of a day labourer Zakir Hossain for sharing a news report on Facebook.

Later, the national daily later removed the post from online due to a discrepancy regarding the photo that was used with the news.

Police arrested Prothom Alo journalist Shamsuzzaman Shams from Savar on the outskirts of the capital early on March 29 following a news report published in the daily that allegedly tarnished the image of the government.

Shams was produced before a Dhaka court on March 30, that sent him to jail in the Digital Security Act (DSA) case filed with Ramna Police Station.

Besides, editor of the daily Prothom Alo Matiur Rahman was sued alongside other staff members under the DSA.

On the other hand, the United States' Department of State has expressed concerns over the Bangladesh government's use of the DSA.

Freedom of expression is an essential element of democracy and is especially important in an election year, said Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson of United States during the Department's press briefing on Thursday.
