A special court today (Jan 30) sentenced blogger Shafiur Rahman Farabi to seven-year imprisonment and fined him Tk 20,000 in a case filed under ICT Act for threatening an Imam.
Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Zulfiqar Hayat pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict.
The case was filed against Farabi on July 23, 2014, with the capital's Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Police filed charge-sheet against him under section 57 (2) of the ICT Act on August 20, 2015.
The court on February 18, 2016, framed charges against him and came up with the judgment today after examining six witnesses on different hearing dates.
Farabi made a post on Facebook in 2013, giving life threat to an Imam, who led the namaz-e-janaza of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.
An active member of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir, Farabi was arrested on March 2, 2015, in writer Abhijit Roy murder case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case on February 16, 2021.
