Two held with 8.16kg gold in Sharsha

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two people along with 70 gold bars weighing 8.163kg after searching their private car at Sharsha border in Jashore.

The gold shipment was stopped at the Kayba border area of Sharsha Upazila on Wednesday (Jan 25) afternoon.

The arrestees are - Shafiqul Islam, 29, son of late Devan Moral of Putkhali village under Benapole Port Thana, and Hannan Pradhan, son of late Ratan Pradhan of Chandpur district.

Khulna-21 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion Sector Commander Colonel Mamunur Rashid confirmed the matter.

He said acting on tipped off, that a gold shipment is being smuggled to India. After that, a team of BGB conducted a drive and recovered the gold.

However, estimated value of the recovered gold is 6.52 crore, he said.

Shafiqul and Hannan has been arrested under the Gold Smuggling Act, and will be handed over to Sharsha Police Station, the BGB official added.
