Mirza Fakhrul, Abbas land in jail

A Dhaka court today (Dec 9) sent Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas to jail in a case lodged over Wednesday's clashes between the party men and police at Nayapaltan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the verdict after rejecting their bail petitions by their lawyers this evening.

The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on Thursday, after a conflict took place on December 7 between BNP men and police in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office.

Earlier this afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul and Abbas were taken to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) allegedly picked up Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir and standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Friday (Dec 9) night.

Member of the BNP's Media Cell Sayrul Kabir Khan said a team of the DB of Police picked them up from their houses at 3:15 am.

DB chief and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Harun-Or-Rashid confirmed this information to newsmen on Friday (Dec 9) morning.
