Bangladesh won't accept IMF's hard conditions: Obaidul Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government would not intend to take loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under any hard conditions.

He said: "If there is any harm to the country in complying with any condition of the IMF, it will not be accepted. We will take loans for our needs and will not accept difficult conditions. What is reasonable would be accepted."

Quader, also the General Secretary of the ruling Awami League, was talking to reporters at Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday (Nov 9).

Global crises are creating pressure on reserves and prices of commodities are increasing, he said, adding: "That’s why we need money right now.”

When asked about the government initiatives to bring back from abroad all the money siphoned off, the minister said the government is looking into the matter.
