DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday (March 31) said the ongoing holidays might be extended till April 9 to contain the spread of coronavirus in Bangladesh.
She said, “We might extend the holiday till April 9 with some relaxation for some sectors on limited basis."
The premier said this while speaking with officials of 64 districts in a video conference that started at 10am from her official residence Ganabhaban.
On March 23, the government declared general holiday in the country from March 26 to April 4 as part of its protective measure against fast spreading of coronavirus.
Government offices, except those involved in emergency services such as law enforcement agencies and hospitals, have been declared closed.
Kitchen markets remain open during this period. People have been asked not to leave their homes, except to collect emergency supplies and daily necessities.
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus affected persons in the country is now 49.
Bangladesh so far reported five deaths from coronavrius. Currently, 25 patients are undergoing treatment. Nineteen coronavirus patients have recovered till date.
