MUNSHIGANJ: The 27th span of the 6.15-kilometre long Padma Bridge has been installed on the 27th and the 28th pillars at the Zajira point in Shariatpur district on Saturday (March 28).
According to engineers concerned, after the 5-C span had been installed around 9:23 am, 4,050 meters of the main structure of the Mega Bridge became visible.
Earlier, the 150-meter long span was brought near the pillars by a floating crane from Mawa's Kumarbhog construction yard on Friday morning.
With the installation of the 150-metre span today, total 27 spans out of 41 were installed in phases. Meanwhile, the construction of 41 pillars out of 42 has already been finished.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader earlier said all the spans of the Padma Bridge will be installed by July 2020. He also said the bridge will be opened to traffic by 2021.
The construction work of the long-cherished Padma Bridge started in December, 2015 and the first span (superstructure) among the 41 was installed on September 30, 2017.
