DHAKA: Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday (March 19) said the government might impose a lockdown on Madaripur and Faridpur districts, if necessary, to contain the further spread of coronavirus in the country.

He said: “Faridpur, Madaripur and its Shibchar upazila are the most vulnerable areas at present as most of the Bangladesh expatriates, who returned home from severely coronavirus-affected countries, are of these areas.”

The minister came up with the remarks while addressing a media briefing at the secretariat in the capital this afternoon.

The areas are under observation and we will lock down the areas if necessary,” Zahid Maleque.

According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IECDR), three more persons including a woman were diagnosed with COVID-19 in Bangladesh within last 24 hours pushing the number of coronavirus cases to 17.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh confirmed first coronavirus death as about 70-year-old person died.

The first three patients, however, were recovered and discharged. The 13 infected persons are undergoing treatment at hospitals.
