DHAKA: Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said UN has long been working with Bangladesh government to transfer Rohingyas to Bhasan Char.
He also said a technical team is expected to visit the Bhasan Char soon. This is not correct to say the UN is opposing the Bhasan Char relocation plan.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said this while exchanging views with journalists at Foreign Service Academy in the capitalon Monday (December 2).
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said The Gambia had sued Myanmar at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Gambia will fight against them. There is no chance for Bangladesh to fight in that court.
Asked if that case by ICC against Myanmar would hamper Rohingya repatriation, the Foreign Secretary said Bangladesh is working bilaterally and multilaterally on Rohingya repatriation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed this issue at the UN in 2019. Myanmar knows since then that we are working on two fronts. It is complementary to one another. So it should not be a problem, he added.
In reply to a question, the Foreign Secretary said the Rohingyas came earlier and went back .However; we want a sustainable repatriation so that they do not return. That is why both accountability and return are needed.
