FENI:  Around fifty cyclone shelters have been prepared to combat the severe cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, but folks are reluctant to move.

The locals do not want to leave behind their homes, furniture and property. Some fear stealth in their absence. Upazila administration and volunteers repeatedly requested them to go the shelter, but in vain.

Though some people of remote parts of the upazila went to cyclone shelters, but returned with dry food.

People do not want to come to cyclone centers leaving behind their homes and possessions, Shanti Ranjan Karmokar, Sonagazi Cyclone Preparation Program (CPP) upazila leader said.

It was learnt after speaking to some people of the coastal regions that all cyclone centers except a few are damp--not in a habitable state.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ajit Dev said: “All schools in the upazila, including half a hundred cyclone shelters, have been prepared to combat the disaster. Besides, a control room has been opened and 10 medical teams as well as fire service members have been kept ready.”
