‘Drug trader’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

CUMILLA:  An alleged drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Mathurapur in Sadar South upazila early Sunday (June 16).

The deceased was identified as Abul Hosain Hashem, 35, son of late Minnat Ali of Komolpur Biranhinpur village in the upazila.

Police said a team of BGB conducted a drive along Mathurapur border early in the morning to recover drugs.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, drug traders opened fire on them forcing them to retaliate in self-defence which triggered a gun battle, Lt Colonel Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin, BGB-10 commanding officer, told Banglanews.

Bullet-hit Hashem was found lying on the ground after the gunfight and he was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident, Kamal said, adding that 18,380 Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
