‘Robber’ killed in Chandpur 'shootout'

CHANDPUR: A suspected robber was killed in a reported shootout with police members in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur early Thursday (June 14).

The deceased was identified as Jakir, 40.

Some arms including a pipe-gun, bullets, knives and machete were recovered from the spot.  

Five police members including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were injured in the incident. They were taken to Hajiganj upazila health complex for treatment.

Hajiganj thana police said they went to the spot on secret information that a gang of robbers were attempting robbery in Syedpur village under Kalcho union under Hajiganj, around 3am.

As the policemen were approaching them, the robbers started to open fire at the law enforcers.

Police fired back, in retaliation.

One of the robbers sustained bullet injuries in the shootout.
He was taken to Hajiganj upazila health complex where the on-duty physician pronounced him dead.

Hajiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Zabedul Islam said deceased Jakir was accused in eight cases over drug abuse and robbery.

The body will be sent to Chandpur Govt General Hospital for an autopsy, he added.
