DHAKA: Awami League candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque has won the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) mayoral polls on Tuesday (May 15), according to unofficial results.
Khaleque bagged 1,73,902 votes while his rival BNP candidate Nazrul Islam Monju got 1,08,956 votes in the polls.
However, no formal announcement was made yet from the temporary announcement center set up by the Election Commission in Khulna Divisional Women's Sports Complex.
The voting began in 289 centers at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm across the municipality. However, voting has been postponed in three polling centers at noon due to irregularities.
Of the 289 polling centers, voting took place in two centers through electronic voting machines (EVM).
The opposition BNP said the ruling AL backed terrorists with the help of police thrown out BNP agents from 40 polling centers. Moreover, many of our agents have beaten up by AL men.
The ruling Awami League candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque claimed that voting was held in a peaceful manner. The Election Commission has also expressed satisfaction saying the election was held in a free, fair and festive manner.
