SUST: Eminent writer-academician Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is now out of danger following an attack and being taken to Dhaka for improvised treatment.
He was earlier taken to the operation theatre (OT) of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after the incident.
“The condition of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal is stable”, said the hospital director Brig Gen Dr AK Mahbubul Haq.
However, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shekh Hasina Ihsanul Karim said in a press release that process is underway to taken Iqbal at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, upon instruction from the premier.
An unidentified youth stabbed Iqbal from behind while he was attending the concluding ceremony of a festival of Electrical Electronics Engineering (EEE) department at the Mukto Mancha of the varsity at around 5:40pm Saturday (March 3).
SUST students nabbed the youth from the spot and confined him at the academic building. He was also given a good thrashing. Afterwards, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) took him to custody for interrogation. Nothing details regarding this was reported immediately.
Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League unit Asad Uddin visited injured Iqbal at the hospital. “Sir is now out of danger. He will be taken to Dhaka for better treatment”, he said quoting the physicians.
Iqbal, however, suffered excessive bleeding and was given blood.
Meanwhile, agitation poured in social media sites denouncing the attack on the famous science fiction writer of the country.
Gonojagoron Mancha brought out a torch procession in Dhaka’s Shahbagh condemning the attack and demanding harsh action over it.
